What is a Labradoodle?A Labradoodle is a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador. They are intelligent, loyal, friendly and playful dogs with a soft wavy coat, rather like a Golden Retriever. The size of the Labradoodle depends largely on the type of Poodle it comes from (there are three types of poodle – standard (which is a large dog), miniature (which is a medium-sized dog) and toy, (which is small). We breed miniature Labradoodles. These dogs are a cross between our beautiful sweet-natured yellow female Labrador, Shakira, and Harry, a lively, intelligent and friendly miniature Poodle, owned by Pepita Carpenter who is an expert in Poodles and Poodle cross-breeds. Our 'mini' Labradoodles end up being a little smaller than a Labrador – about 40cm high – just a perfect size for a family pet. Why do we breed Labradoodles? Our family has had Labradors as pets for years. We have also been Labrador breeders – registered as Hedgerley Labradors with the Canine Council. We love Labradors for the gentle, intelligent and affectionate dogs they are. We've found them to be wonderful family pets. There are two things that can be a concern in some cases: joint problems; and they can be shockers for shedding hair. When we discussed these two problems with our vet, he suggested we bred Labradoodles, and he put us in touch with Pepita. We didn't know much about Poodles, and to be honest, had always been rather put off the breed by the fancy hair-cuts. But the vet put a few things straight. Poodles, he said, were very intelligent and friendly dogs – one of the brightest breeds and even cleverer than the Labrador. With their wool rather than hair coats, they don't shed, and this means that offspring of a Poodle cross often shed considerably less than other dogs. The other plus was that the sort of problems that have come to the fore in the Labrador breed were not a problem at all in the miniature Poodle. A Labradoodle, the vet thought, would make an ideal family pet – and that's just exactly what we decided to breed. How are our labradoodles special? |
